NJ State Drought Watch Declared

The administration urges all residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve water. Over the past three months, New Jersey has experienced significantly below-average rainfall, resulting in diminished streamflow, reservoir, and groundwater levels.

The Drought Watch aims to raise public awareness about the stress on our water sources and encourages the public to adopt voluntary conservation practices. Should conditions continue to deteriorate, the state may need to declare a Drought Warning or a Drought Emergency, which could lead to mandatory water use restrictions.

Key details:

  • Water Supply Stress: Warmer-than-average conditions, coupled with rainfall deficits, have contributed to reduced water levels across the state.
  • Current Precipitation Deficits: Rainfall has been 2 to 7 inches below normal over the past 90 days.
  • Potential Records: September was the third driest on record since 1895, and October may become the driest month ever recorded in the state.

As Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette emphasized, “Voluntary water conservation now can help to avoid more serious and restrictive measures in the future.”

Sustainable Jersey certification is a FREE, voluntary, and prestigious designation for municipal governments in New Jersey.  Municipalities that achieve certification are considered by their peers, state government and experts and civic organizations in New Jersey, to be among the leaders in the state.

The New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign just completed its 10th year, distributing almost 1 million seedlings.  This fall the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign will be the focal article in the Arbor Day Foundation’s newsletter highlighting our great work.  Over the years the State and the Foundation has great pictures showing the over 1,000 events held, what we lack is pictures of the seedlings being planted and them growing from seedlings to trees.  Arbor Day Foundation also gets a lot of questions about people planting the trees and if the trees get bigger.

To help document our seedlings becoming trees and the great restoration they provide to our places we call home; a simple survey was made with a way to link a picture of the planted seedlings that will become or are now trees.   Please fill out this survey if you have planted the seedlings.
